The Philosophy of Natural Living
At what point in history did humanity become so disconnected from the natural world around us? Was it the chemical revolution? The industrial revolution? Or way before? Why did we discredit Native American’s approach to living in harmony with Earth and all her inhabitants?
The number one way to improve your health and well-being is to embrace the earth’s magnetic field, cherish the sunshine, and feel the vibration of the wind, bees and fragrant flowers. While natural living can be embraced in our homes, it starts outside, in nature. Bringing the natural world, inside our homes is our goal. From the textiles we sleep on every night, to the elements we use to clean. It all should be sourced from nature, safe for you, your family, pets, and the earth.
I have done a lot of research in regards to what is the BEST for me and my family. I have tested and tried many of these products and recipes that I will share. Nothing of what I recommend will be what I don’t personally believe in. A few things that I have learned throughout this process is that it takes time, and a bit of money. Being patient and not fearful will help you get through this journey from a powerful position. Understanding that there is grace for the times we live in is important because, without grace, there is fear. Fear-based decisions ultimately lead you to make the wrong decision or an impulse decision. I recommend taking your time in researching the best options for you and your family.
How to Detox Your Home and Elevate Your Life
Step 1 ‘Ditch the Toxins’
Start with different areas of the home. Go through your cabinets and look at the products you are using. If they are considered unsafe, dispose of them properly. A good way to check if you are unsure is by using the EWG Website.
Facts and Stats: Did you know “Chemicals can come out of our products and end up in the air and dust in the home, where they can enter your body,” says Dr. Ami Zota, an environmental and public health expert at George Washington University. Her team recently discovered 45 different chemicals that are commonly found in indoor dust. Many of the identified chemicals belong to a group called ‘endocrine disruptors.’ “ -NIH
A common list of harmful that have endocrine-disrupting chemicals include:
- fragrant candles
- traditional laundry detergents
- plastic dishwasher pods
- cleaning sprays
- paints
- SLS soaps and shampoos
How to Detox Your Home and Elevate Your Life Step 2 ‘Make the Swap’
Once you have identified the harmful ingredients in your products, take note of these sneaky ingredients that may be present in ‘greenwashed’ products. It is important when making these switches you know that some companies like to ‘trick’ the consumer by making the item seem ‘green’ and eco-friendly but they have the same toxic ingredients you are trying to avoid.
For example, a company might claim to be green in their dish soap but they still add ‘fragrance’ and Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS). “Sodium laureth sulfate has been implicated in several health concerns including skin and eye irritation, but the main problem with this chemical is the fact that it’s frequently contaminated by 1,4 dioxane, a known carcinogen that is a common by-product of the manufacturing process [2].” -forceofnatureclean
Not to be confused with sodium laurel sulfate, which is derived from coconut oil or palm oil which is safer. Now that you know the difference between ingredients, you can make powerful decisions in replacing your household items.

Step 3 ‘Better Textiles and Furniture’
While you may have swapped your toxic household products for non-toxic products, the next step is to examine your furniture.
Our rooms are supposed to be a safe place to relax and get restful sleep. Identify what may be causing allergens or irritants from things like bedding (blankets, sheets, comforters, pillows) mattresses furniture pieces, paint decor (rugs and lighting) pet beds, and toys.
For Bedding, synthetic fabrics for blankets and sheets such as rayon polyester and nylon acrylic are toxic and will leach into your system… especially at night when you’re sleeping.
Mattress, Pillows, Paint, Rugs, Couches, and Particle-Board Furniture are mostly made from petroleum-based products like polyurethane synthetic latex foam polyester formaldehyde polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic for waterproof liners.
These components off-gas VOCs which are linked to serious health risks like asthma, depression, eczema, cancer, etc.

Step 4 ‘Replace Toxic Furniture’
Now, I know what you are thinking, “Am I supposed to throw out everything and start over?”
Ultimately, there is so much to think about as we fill our homes with beautiful furniture and decor. It can be overwhelming and get pretty expensive very fast.
However, I recommend taking it slow, and prioritizing what is most important to you in this season. If replacing bedsheets is a feasible step, go for that first!
Great options for bedding include textiles from nature such as wool linen and organic cotton If you are looking for furniture like couches or dressers, instead of buying cheap particle-board pieces that contain formaldehyde glue, you can search for second-hand furniture that has already off-gassed. Or buy solid wood pieces that are eco-friendly and healthy for you!
