I chose this few-day-old bread for French toast to give it more life and moisture. Using a bit of stale bread helps absorb more liquid, making it a better option for having fluffy and moist French Toast.
Instead of the classic triangle toast shape, I went with the sticks for a nostalgic memory of dunking French toast sticks into maple syrup one morning before school. It was such a special treat, I thought I would try to recreate that feeling.

The Same Morning Method: This option is quicker, but not as moist as it doesn’t have much time to soak up the cinnamon-egg custard mixture. It will still be delicious but might need a little more maple syrup.
The Overnight Method: If you have the time to let it soak for at least three hours or overnight, you will have the most dense French toast. It will be spongy and tasty, full of flavor.

For those of you who would like to know, I looked it up because I was curious as today is the Fourth of July. So, the history of this dish originates before France was discovered. Originally, it was found in a Roman recipe book called, Cooking and Dining in Imperial Rome. Therefore, it was called Roman Bread.
It wasn’t until French settlers in America came and popularized this dish that it became known as French Toast.

Ingredients
- 1 loaf of sourdough bread (a few days old)
- 1 cup blueberries
- 6 eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Place crinkled parchment paper on a 9x13 in baking dish
- Make the cinnamon-egg custard mixture by mixing the eggs, milk, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla
- Pour custard over the bread slices
- If time permits, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or a silicone cover and put it into the fridge for 3 hours or overnight.
- When ready, preheat the oven to 350 F and place the uncovered dish in the oven
- Bake for 45-50 min
